It could be the embodiment of a monotheist God or it could be interpreted as the embodiment of the reality and set of rules that the characters live in. Truth is proposed by the show as a possibility, as none of the citizens in the world worship Truth and yet the goal of Father is to become a deity like Truth. It is never clearly identified as a deity, nevertheless it holds vast cosmic powers and passes judgment over those who perform Human Transmutation. Truth is a metaphysical being that is in theory antagonistic in the show. This can be seen as a flawed representation of Jesus that was able to reach salvation through his humanity and not through his divine powers granted by the Philosophers Stone inside him. In the end of the show, he did a selfless sacrifice for his family and the wellbeing of others and redeemed himself for his sins. Furthermore, he abandoned his kids and displayed a selfish and careless attitude towards others. He is hundreds of years old and is a living Philosophers stone. He is the survivor of a massacre in an ancient kingdom however, he is also responsible for said massacre. The image of Van Hohenheim can be a reference to Jesus however, it is a more human and flawed version of Jesus. He is dressed in white clothes throughout the show that usually symbolize purity, however his antagonistic role in the series suggests that his strive to become God is the reason behind his name being capitalized in reference to God. Perhaps Father could be a symbol of the priests that attempt to replicate Gods will without actually being God. The symbol (the crucified serpent that is) is called the Flamel so thats what i will be refering to it as from now on. The priests in the Catholic church are often addressed as Father, and in the literature of the bible, God has always been addressed with a capital letter whether it is written as “He” or as “Father”. His name is Father, because he created the rest of the homunculus, however he chose that name as a reference to the priests or God in the Christian religion. The symbol can be attributed to many meanings, as it contains the religious images of a Christian cross and a snake, this is further explored by Chris Qu, when he describes in his online article as, “it actually refers to creating a philosophers stone by "crucifying a serpent." It's a metaphor for purifying something that is venomous, or dangerous, and becoming stronger with it.” (Qu)įather himself is the main antagonist of the show. The emblem used by the different state Alchemists is the Flamel cross, a symbol created by the historical father of alchemy Nicholas Flamel. Each one of the homunculi is named after one of the seven deadly sins, Pride, Lust, Gluttony, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Greed. These 7 villains in the show are known as the Homunculus, they are sentient beings that contain a fragment of Fathers soul, despite Father being a homunculus himself.
